Buckingham Palace, Harrods, British Museum

Thursday February 18, 2010

Headed for Buckingham Palace. It’s every bit what I expected; the building and all that surrounds the Queen’s “digs” is impressive. Although Her Majesty may want to rethink the curb appeal out front.

A few of us were waiting around for the changing of the guard but it never seemed to happen. A group of “soldiers”, all decked out in red, rode by on their horses. That was interesting. Don’t see that everyday in Vancouver, well maybe at the pride parade

Harrods
This department store is completely over the top. The food courts are decedent beyond belief. The Dianna memorial is frankly a little tacky. There’s a picture below, you be the judge.

British Museum
If the British are ever required to return any of the Egyptian loot they absconded this museum will stand half empty. Most of it’s content is not actually British. One of its star attractions is the Rosetta stone, which if you aren’t aware revealed the secret of how to read Egyptian hieroglyphics.

The sculptures from the Parthenon are in sad condition; you can only imagine how magnificent they were in antiquity. Due to much controversy, the Greeks want them back. Now in the British’s defense Lord Elgin purchased the sculptures for the British Museum in the early 19th century from the Turks who occupied Greece at the time- one could argue as to whether the Empire misappropriated anything.
